Xlendi Bay

Xlendi Bay is one of the best-known coastal destinations in Gozo. The narrow bay is enclosed by high limestone cliffs, with the village and its waterfront concentrated around the head of the inlet.

The beach itself is relatively small, but Xlendi is much more than a beach. Visitors come for swimming, snorkelling, walking, dining by the water and exploring the surrounding cliffs and countryside.

The combination of dramatic scenery and easy access makes Xlendi one of the most convenient places on Gozo for visitors who want to combine a coastal stop with food, drinks and a village atmosphere.

What can you do at Xlendi Bay?

🏊 Swim

The bay is a popular swimming location, with access to the sea from the small sandy beach and other points around the waterfront. As always, check the sea conditions before entering the water.

🤿 Snorkel

The rocky sides of the bay and the clear Mediterranean water make Xlendi interesting for snorkelling. The outer parts of the inlet can offer particularly attractive underwater scenery when conditions are calm.

🥾 Walk the cliffs

Paths around the headlands and cliffs provide views back towards the bay and along Gozo's coastline. The scenery changes considerably as you climb away from the waterfront.

🍴 Eat and drink

Xlendi has a wide choice of restaurants, cafés and other places to eat and drink close to the water. It is therefore easy to turn a short beach stop into a longer visit.

🌅 Watch the sunset

The surrounding cliffs and open western aspect can make Xlendi particularly attractive later in the day. The atmosphere around the waterfront changes as the daytime crowds begin to thin.

More than a beach

Xlendi is quite different from Ramla or San Blas. The beach is small, but the setting is spectacular and there is much more to do around it. It is one of the best choices for visitors who want a combination of swimming, scenery, walking and food.

The bay is also surrounded by historic and natural features, including the Xlendi Tower and the cliffs and countryside above the inlet.

e-Malta tip: Allow more time for Xlendi than you might for a simple beach stop. Two hours gives you time for the waterfront, a swim and a short walk, while a meal or longer coastal walk can easily turn it into a half-day visit.

Practical information

Getting there

Xlendi is reached by road from Victoria and the surrounding villages. The road descends into the bay, where the built-up waterfront is concentrated around the head of the inlet.

Parking

Parking can be difficult during busy summer periods, particularly around the waterfront. Visitors may need to park farther from the beach and walk down into the bay.

Facilities

Xlendi has considerably more facilities than most of Gozo's smaller beaches. Restaurants, cafés, shops and other visitor services are available around the bay, although opening hours vary with the season.

When to visit

Early morning is usually a quieter time to see the bay. Late afternoon and evening can also be attractive, particularly if you want to combine the visit with dinner or sunset views.

Take care: The cliffs around Xlendi are steep and exposed. Stay on established paths and keep a safe distance from cliff edges, particularly in windy conditions.
