Mġarr ix-Xini
A dramatic sheltered inlet on Gozo's south coast, where steep rocky cliffs meet clear Mediterranean water. Mġarr ix-Xini is a beautiful place for swimming, snorkelling, kayaking and exploring one of Gozo's most distinctive coastal valleys.
Mġarr ix-Xini
Mġarr ix-Xini is one of Gozo's most atmospheric coastal locations. The narrow inlet cuts inland between steep rocky sides before opening towards the Mediterranean, creating a sheltered setting that feels quite different from Gozo's larger open beaches.
There is a small area of sand at the head of the inlet, while much of the shoreline is rocky. The clear water and enclosed shape of the bay make it a popular place for swimming and snorkelling when conditions are suitable.
The surrounding cliffs and valley are an important part of the experience. Mġarr ix-Xini is as much a landscape to explore as it is a place to spend time in the water.
What can you do at Mġarr ix-Xini?
🏊 Swim
The sheltered inlet is well suited to swimming when the sea is calm. The narrow shape of the bay can make the water feel protected, but conditions can still change and visitors should always take care around the rocky shoreline.
🤿 Snorkel
The clear water and rocky sides of the inlet provide good opportunities for snorkelling. The enclosed setting makes the bay particularly attractive when visibility is good.
🛶 Kayak
Mġarr ix-Xini is a natural location for kayaking and exploring the inlet from the water. The steep sides of the valley give a different perspective when viewed from the sea.
🥾 Explore the valley
The road and paths around the inlet allow visitors to appreciate the cliffs and countryside surrounding the bay. Wear suitable footwear if you intend to explore beyond the immediate beach area.
A dramatic Gozo coastal setting
Unlike Ramla or San Blas, Mġarr ix-Xini is not primarily about a broad sandy beach. Its appeal comes from the combination of a small beach, clear water, steep cliffs and the long narrow inlet.
The location also has a strong historical character. A coastal tower stands near the entrance to the inlet, forming part of the defensive landscape that once protected Gozo's coast.

When to visit
Early morning and late afternoon can be especially pleasant. The inlet can become busy during summer, particularly at weekends and around the middle of the day.
