Dwejra Viewpoint
Dwejra is one of the most recognisable landscapes in Gozo. The western coast combines high limestone cliffs, unusual rock formations and an open view towards the Mediterranean.
From the viewpoints around Dwejra it is possible to see several of the area's most important natural features, including the Inland Sea, Fungus Rock and the coastline around the former Azure Window.
The view
The Dwejra coastline is particularly impressive because the landscape changes dramatically over a relatively small area. The sheltered Inland Sea lies below the surrounding limestone cliffs, while beyond it the coast opens towards the sea.
The area is especially attractive for photography. The colour and texture of the limestone changes throughout the day, while the position of the sun can dramatically alter the appearance of the cliffs and sea.
Fungus Rock and the Dwejra coastline
Looking across the water from Dwejra, Fungus Rock forms one of the most distinctive features of the landscape. The large limestone sea stack stands at the entrance to Dwejra Bay and provides an excellent subject for photographs.
The wider Dwejra area is also important for its geology, wildlife and coastal landscape. The combination of cliffs, sea and unusual rock formations makes it one of Gozo's essential scenic locations.
Best time for photographs
Dwejra can be photographed throughout the day, but changing light can produce very different views. Early and late light can bring out the warm colours of the limestone, while clearer conditions provide wider views across the Mediterranean.
Conditions on the western coast can change quickly. Strong winds and rough seas are common at times, particularly during winter and periods of unsettled weather.
