Cittadella Viewpoint
The Cittadella is one of Gozo's most distinctive landmarks. Rising above Victoria, the fortified city occupies a naturally strategic position near the centre of the island. Its elevated bastions provide views across the surrounding countryside and towards many of Gozo's villages and churches.
The site has a long history of settlement and defence. Archaeological evidence points to occupation in prehistoric times, while the Citadel later developed through the Phoenician, Punic, Roman, medieval and Knights of St John periods.

The view from the bastions
Walking along the fortified ramparts provides a broad panorama of Gozo. From different sections of the walls you can look across Victoria and the surrounding valleys, with villages, churches and countryside extending towards the coast.
The elevated position makes the Cittadella particularly good for photography. The view changes with the light and weather, while the honey-coloured limestone of the fortifications provides a strong foreground for photographs across the island.

A historic fortified city
The present appearance of the Cittadella was shaped particularly by the rebuilding carried out by the Knights of St John. The southern side overlooking Victoria was reconstructed between 1599 and 1603, creating much of the imposing fortified landscape visible today.
Inside the walls are the Gozo Cathedral, historic buildings, museums, narrow streets and other remains that reflect the different periods of the Citadel's history.
Photography
The bastions are especially rewarding for photographers looking for elevated views of Gozo. Morning and late-afternoon light can bring out the texture and colour of the limestone walls, while clearer conditions give longer views across the island and towards Malta.
