Walking at Wied il-Għasri

The valley becomes particularly dramatic as the route approaches the sea, where the high limestone walls narrow around the inlet. The area is also part of a wider countryside and coastal landscape with paths, fields and dry-stone walls.

Conditions can change quickly along the coast. Take care on uneven limestone, especially near exposed edges and when the ground is wet.

Valley and countryside

The approach to Wied il-Għasri passes through the characteristic rural landscape of north-west Gozo. Fields, rubble walls and country tracks surround the valley, giving the walk a distinctly agricultural character before the landscape becomes more rugged near the coast.

From higher ground, the valley can be appreciated as a narrow incision through the surrounding limestone countryside. The contrast between cultivated land inland and the exposed coast makes this one of the more distinctive walking areas in this part of Gozo.

At the coast

At the lower end of the valley, the landscape closes around a small rocky inlet. Steps cut into the rock provide access towards the water, although conditions can be affected by swell and rough seas.

Visitors should take particular care here. The rocks can be uneven and slippery, and the sea can become hazardous when conditions deteriorate.

Combining the walk

Wied il-Għasri works well as part of a wider north-west Gozo day. The surrounding countryside, coastal paths and nearby viewpoints can be combined with other places around Għasri, Żebbuġ and the northern coast.
