San Blas Bay
A small, secluded red-sand beach below Nadur on Gozo's north-eastern coast. San Blas is quieter and more intimate than Ramla Bay, but the steep walk down — and especially back up — is part of the visit.
San Blas Bay
San Blas Bay is one of Gozo's smaller sandy beaches, tucked into a secluded valley on the north-eastern coast below Nadur. Its reddish-orange sand gives it an immediate visual connection with the much larger Ramla l-Ħamra.
The setting is one of the main reasons to visit. The bay is surrounded by countryside and rocky slopes, with very little development directly around the beach. The limited road access also helps keep San Blas quieter than many of Gozo's more accessible coastal spots.
At around 100 metres long, it is a much smaller beach than Ramla. That gives San Blas a different character: it is a place for a swim, some time on the sand and enjoying the landscape rather than a large, open beach resort.
What can you do at San Blas Bay?
🏊 Swim
The clear Mediterranean water makes San Blas a popular swimming spot. As with any open-water location, conditions depend on the weather, wind and sea state on the day.
🤿 Snorkel
The rocky edges of the bay provide areas of interest for snorkelling. The combination of clear water, rocks and a sandy seabed makes it particularly attractive when the sea is calm.
☀️ Relax on the beach
The reddish-orange sand and sheltered setting make San Blas a good place to slow down and enjoy a quieter beach. Because the beach is relatively small, it can feel busy quickly during the height of summer.
🥾 Enjoy the walk
The approach is part of the experience. The final section down to the beach is steep and narrow, so allow extra time and take care on the return journey.
Why visit San Blas?
San Blas is often described as a smaller, quieter alternative to Ramla Bay. Both have reddish sand, but San Blas is much more enclosed and has a considerably steeper approach.
For visitors who enjoy less developed coastal locations, the combination of red sand, clear water and surrounding countryside makes San Blas one of Gozo's distinctive beach experiences.
Practical information
Getting there
San Blas Bay is reached from the direction of Nadur. The final road towards the beach is very steep and the last section is closed to normal traffic, meaning visitors need to continue on foot down the steep pathway.
Parking
Parking close to the upper part of the access route is limited. In busy periods, visitors may need to park farther away and walk.
Facilities
Facilities at San Blas are limited compared with larger and more developed beaches. Seasonal refreshments or other services may be available, but visitors should not rely on them being open. Bringing drinking water is advisable.
When to visit
Early morning or later afternoon can be more comfortable, particularly during the hottest part of summer. The beach is small, so arriving early can also make it easier to find a good place on the sand.
