Ramla l-Ħamra

Ramla Bay is one of the places that gives Gozo its distinctive character. A broad sweep of reddish-gold sand lies between the surrounding hills, with fields, dry-stone walls and the fertile Ramla valley behind the beach rather than a built-up seafront.

The Maltese name Ramla l-Ħamra means the red sand, and the unusual colour is what makes the beach immediately recognisable. It is Gozo's largest sandy beach and one of the island's best-known places for swimming and relaxing.

Ramla remains relatively natural, with the valley and surrounding countryside forming an important part of the experience. The cliffs above the western side lead towards the area traditionally associated with Calypso Cave.

What can you do at Ramla Bay?

🏊 Swim

The wide sandy beach and generally shallow water make Ramla a popular swimming beach. Conditions can change with the weather and sea state, so normal care is needed when the sea is rough.

🤿 Snorkel

The clear Mediterranean water can be good for snorkelling, although the underwater character varies around the bay. There are rocky areas in parts of the water.

☀️ Relax on the beach

The red-gold sand, open valley and surrounding countryside make Ramla a natural place to spend part of a Gozo day.

🥾 Explore the valley

The countryside around Ramla provides opportunities for walking and viewpoints above the bay. Ramla is also included in the Visit Gozo walking network.

History around Ramla

Ramla is more than a beach. Archaeological remains from the Roman period are associated with the area, including remains beneath the sand. The bay was also part of Gozo's coastal defensive landscape during the period of the Knights of St John.

Above the western side of the bay is the cave traditionally associated with Calypso in Homer's Odyssey. This is a long-standing tradition rather than something that can be established with certainty, but the association is an important part of Ramla's identity.

Practical information

Getting there

Ramla Bay can be reached by road from the direction of Xagħra and Nadur. Parking is available near the beach, although it can become limited at busy times. Remember that returning from sea level means walking uphill.

Facilities

Basic visitor facilities and seasonal refreshments are available around the beach. Facilities can vary outside the main summer season, so bringing water and anything else needed for a longer visit is sensible.

When to visit

Ramla can be busy during the height of summer. An early start or later visit can provide a quieter experience. It is also worth visiting outside the main bathing season when the valley and surrounding countryside can be particularly peaceful.

e-Malta tip: Add Ramla to your Gozo route and combine it with nearby history, viewpoints, villages or food.
