Hondoq ir-Rummien
Hondoq ir-Rummien is a small coastal bay below Qala on Gozo's south-eastern side. It looks across the channel towards Comino and Malta, giving the beach a very different setting from the larger sandy beaches on the north coast.
The bay combines a small sandy beach with rocky shoreline and clear Mediterranean water. It is particularly popular with visitors looking for a place to swim, snorkel or spend a few hours by the sea without the scale of a large resort beach.
The surrounding landscape remains relatively open, with the countryside of Qala rising behind the bay. The views across the water are one of the main attractions.
What can you do at Hondoq ir-Rummien?
🏊 Swim
The sheltered bay is a popular swimming location, with clear water and easy access to the sea from the beach and rocky shoreline. Always check the sea conditions before entering the water.
🤿 Snorkel
The rocky edges of the bay provide opportunities for snorkelling, particularly when the water is calm and clear. The surrounding underwater rocks and shallow areas make the coastline interesting to explore.
☀️ Relax by the sea
The sandy beach is relatively small, but there are also rocky areas around the bay where visitors can sit and enjoy the views. The outlook towards Comino makes this a particularly scenic place to spend time.
🚤 Watch the boats
Hondoq's position at the entrance to the channel gives it views of boats travelling between Gozo, Comino and Malta. On busy summer days the bay can have a lively atmosphere.
A different kind of Gozo beach
Hondoq ir-Rummien is best thought of as a bay and swimming location with a small sandy beach, rather than a large traditional beach. That makes it useful for visitors who want to combine swimming with exploring the coast and enjoying the scenery.
The bay is also associated with historic coastal activity. A small coastal tower and other remains in the surrounding area reflect the importance of Gozo's shoreline and its approaches over the centuries.
