History
Għajnsielem became an autonomous parish in 1855. As the village grew, a new church was begun in 1924 in Gothic-Lombard style. Construction was intermittent and the church was eventually completed with the blessing of its bell tower in 1979.

The Latin-cross plan, tall bell tower and Gothic detailing make the church one of the most visible landmarks on the approach from the harbour.
Visiting the church
The titular statue of Our Lady of Loreto was made by Gallard et Fils of Marseille and arrived in Gozo in 1866. The old parish church remains nearby in Independence Square.
