Qbajjar Bay

Qbajjar Bay lies on Gozo's northern coast, immediately west of Marsalforn. It is a rocky coastal location rather than a large sandy beach, with the sea enclosed by low limestone formations and the surrounding countryside.

The bay is especially attractive because of its proximity to Gozo's salt pans. A visit can therefore combine swimming or a short coastal stop with one of the island's most distinctive traditional landscapes.

The area is generally less urban and less crowded than the centre of Marsalforn, although it can still become busy during the summer months.

What can you do at Qbajjar Bay?

🏊 Swim

Qbajjar provides rocky access to the sea and can be a pleasant swimming location when conditions are calm. Take care when entering and leaving the water over uneven rock.

🤿 Snorkel

The rocky shoreline and clear water make the bay suitable for snorkelling when visibility is good. The coastal rock formations are part of the appeal.

🚶 Walk the coast

Qbajjar is a good starting point for exploring the north coast on foot. Walk towards the salt pans and along the shoreline for changing views of the landscape.

🧂 Visit the salt pans

The famous salt pans lie immediately along this stretch of coast. Their geometric rock-cut pools create one of the most recognisable landscapes in northern Gozo.

🌅 Enjoy the views

The open northern coastline gives good views across the Mediterranean and is particularly attractive in the softer light of late afternoon.

A beach stop with a difference

Qbajjar is best thought of as a coastal swimming and sightseeing stop rather than a conventional sandy beach. Its combination of rocky shoreline, clear water and nearby salt pans makes it quite different from Ramla or San Blas.

It is also close enough to Marsalforn to combine the two locations in one visit, making Qbajjar useful for a northern Gozo itinerary.

e-Malta tip: Combine Qbajjar Bay with the nearby salt pans and Xwejni Bay. Allow extra time if you want to walk along the coast and explore the salt-pan landscape.

Practical information

Getting there

Qbajjar is reached by road from Marsalforn. The bay is close to the main coastal road and is straightforward to combine with other northern Gozo attractions.

Parking

There are areas where visitors can park close to the coast, but spaces can become limited during busy summer periods.

Facilities

Facilities are more limited than in central Marsalforn. It is sensible to bring water and anything else you need if you plan to stay for some time.

When to visit

Morning can be quieter for swimming and exploring. Late afternoon is particularly attractive for the coastal scenery and views across the north coast.

Take care: The shoreline is rocky and uneven. Wet limestone can be slippery, so use suitable footwear and take care when entering the sea.
