Walking information

A published Ramla country walk is about 10 km and takes around four hours, with additional time if stopping at the beach or Calypso Cave. The route passes through working countryside, so keep to paths and respect private fields.

Across the Ramla countryside

The wider Ramla area is surrounded by fertile valleys and terraced agricultural land. Country paths and minor roads provide a different experience from the beach itself.

Ramla il-Ħamra

The route reaches Ramla Bay, famous for its broad reddish-golden sand. The beach lies at the end of a fertile valley and forms one of Gozo’s most recognisable coastal landscapes.

Calypso Cave

The cave above the western side of Ramla is traditionally identified with Calypso’s cave in Homer’s Odyssey. The identification is a long-standing tradition rather than a proven archaeological fact. The viewpoint provides a dramatic perspective over the bay.

Valley and farming landscape

Traditional rubble walls, cultivated fields and valley slopes show the continuing agricultural character of northern Gozo. Walkers should remain on paths and avoid cultivated plots.

Extending the walk

Ramla can be combined with Xagħra and its heritage sites, or with longer countryside routes around Nadur.
