Walking information
The eastern countryside is exposed and some sections have rough or unclear paths. The published 11 km circuit is moderate, with uphill sections. Carry water, use suitable footwear and do not cross private fields or take shortcuts through cultivated land.
The countryside around Qala
Qala occupies Gozo’s eastern edge, where the village gives way to fields, valleys and open coastal country. The elevated landscape creates frequent views towards Comino and the Maltese islands.
Ħondoq ir-Rummien
One of the natural highlights is Ħondoq ir-Rummien, a small bay below the countryside. The bay has clear water and a sheltered setting, while the surrounding paths provide views across the channel.
Qala Battery and coastal heritage
The wider walking area includes Qala Battery and other historic features around the eastern coast. Prehistoric cart ruts and traditional rural landscapes add archaeological interest.
Fields and garrigue
Away from the bay, the route crosses open countryside and garrigue. The landscape is particularly attractive outside the hottest part of summer.
A longer eastern circuit
A published circular route starts and ends at Mġarr Harbour, passing Ħondoq ir-Rummien, Qala Battery and Qala before returning to the harbour. It is about 11 km and takes around four to five hours.
