Walking information

The official published route is 13 km and graded moderate, with steep inclines and some rocky sections. The recommended walking season is October to May. The Dwejra coast is exposed: keep away from cliff edges and the shoreline in strong winds or rough seas.

From Victoria to Lunzjata

The official Dwejra route begins in Victoria and gradually leaves the urban centre for Wied il-Lunzjata, one of Gozo’s greener valleys. Springs, cultivated plots, stone channels and traditional rural features give this section a very different character from the exposed coast later in the walk.

Across western Gozo

From Lunzjata the route continues through Ta’ Kerċem and the surrounding countryside, passing rural roads, valleys and the hamlet of Santa Luċija. The landscape becomes progressively more open as the route approaches the western edge of the island.

Arriving at Dwejra

Dwejra brings together several major natural and historic features in a compact area. Dwejra Tower overlooks the coast, while Fungus Rock, the former Azure Window site, the Blue Hole and Inland Sea are all part of the wider landscape. The coast is exposed and should be treated with particular care in rough weather.

The Inland Sea and surrounding geology

The Inland Sea is a sheltered seawater lagoon connected with the Mediterranean through a natural tunnel. Around it are dramatic limestone formations, collapsed caverns, fossil-bearing rock and freshwater habitats.

Returning to Victoria

The published route returns through the western countryside towards Victoria. It can be shortened by using public transport from San Lawrenz or Dwejra.
